Do not buy any balun without knowing the choking attenuation in dB.
Reason = Most baluns sold on ebay and Radio stores simply have less than 2 dB common mode attenuation
Don;'t buy without getting any performance data and not swr curve. The only function for a 1:1 is common mode suppression so it's crucial you know what the figures are!
Set up with a spectrum analyzer with tracking generator for maximum performance and minimum losses.

Regardless of the antenna you're using, an isolation balun can provide numerous advantages:
- Preventing unwanted RFI by eliminating feedline common mode currents and radiation.
- All power goes to the antenna, improving efficiency.
- Power is balanced between driven elements of antenna.
- Can help overcome a less than optimal ground.
Warning a 1:1 balun should never be used on its second harmonic ie a half-wave center-fed dipole fed with any coax (open line is ok) like an 80 meter dipole being used on 40 meters. The impedance can be 7000 ohms or greater creating very high voltages which can bring about voltage breakdown and/or excessive heating.
Damage to most baluns will be permanent as it alters the magnetic properties of most cores the K type will survive this however your amplifier may not!
An antenna tuner, transmatch , doesn't really TUNE your antenna OR ANY PART OF IT!
What an antenna tuner or transmatch does do, is transform the impedance at the antenna feed output at the radio to a value that your transceiver can handle, (typically 50 Ohms).
When thinking about antenna tuners and SWR, it's important to remember that the tuner has no effect whatsoever on the SWR between itself and the antenna.
It is the SWR between the transmitter and the tuner that is changed with the tuner controls.
If you are intending to use a atu at the radio end ...think again .... you can be a much bigger signal just by improving your system matching no needs for any tuner at the radio end .. think big ..be big.
